CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — The backers of a long-awaited downtown development project in a Centre County community say it’s time to move forward and hopefully get construction underway this year.
Along the Bellefonte Waterfront District, it has been a long wait, nearly six years, since plans were first announced, in 2018, for a hotel, parking deck and condominiums to be built along Spring Creek.
In recent years, the pandemic, economic factors, and other issues have delayed the project.
Now, the developers say they are ready to begin construction.
“Our goal is to start this year. We figure it’s a 14 to 15 month build for the project. I failed to mention atop the parking garage will be 48 residential condominiums for sale.”
Here's the latest rendition of what is anticipated. The hotel will have 90 rooms with a restaurant and rooftop lounge, and the parking garage will include nearly 300 spaces with 25 thousand square feet of first floor retail space.
Developers want to generate business in downtown Bellefonte while also highlighting the town's history and they're not concerned, in fact they welcome news of more hotel projects in the work along the Benner Pike, just outside of Bellefonte.
“The hotel and hospitality industry has been changing over the last few years. Centre County has been a hotbed for development. We feel more hotel rooms are going to be needed.”
So, if all goes according to plan, the Waterfront District development could be open for business in the spring of 2026.
